Puerto Rico, a land rich in history and culture, boasts a treasure trove of architectural gems. Among these, the Catedral San Juan Bautista stands as a symbol of faith, resilience, and the island’s heritage. Located in the heart of Old San Juan, this cathedral is a must-visit.

The Historical Significance

The Catedral San Juan Bautista, also known as the San Juan Cathedral, is one of the oldest buildings in Puerto Rico and the second oldest cathedral in the United States. Its construction began in 1521, just two years after the Spanish arrived on the island, and it has stood the test of time, surviving numerous natural disasters, including earthquakes and hurricanes.

Architectural Marvels

The San Juan Cathedral is a stunning example of colonial-era architecture. As you approach the cathedral, you’ll see its impressive façade, featuring intricate carvings and a beautiful rose window. The twin bell towers that flank the entrance add to its grandeur.

One of the standout features of the cathedral is its octagonal tower, known as the “Capilla del Cristo” or Chapel of Christ. This tower houses an image of Jesus Christ known as the “Cristo de la Salud” and is believed to possess healing powers.

The Crypt of Ponce de León

One of the most fascinating aspects of the San Juan Cathedral is its connection to the famed explorer Juan Ponce de León. In a hidden crypt beneath the cathedral lies his final resting place. Ponce de León, is a central figure in Puerto Rican history and is believed to have been the first European to set foot in Florida.

Services and Events

To this day, San Juan Cathedral continues to serve as a place of worship for the local Catholic community. If you happen to visit during a Sunday Mass, you’ll have the opportunity to witness the faithful coming together in this historic setting. The cathedral also hosts special events and concerts, providing a unique experience for visitors.
